John E. Upledger, DO, OMM & Lisa Upledger, DC, FIAMA, CST-D - CrainoSacral Therapy - Working In Concert With Nature

Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC) once declared that the “natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.” In the centuries since then, medical science has undergone incomprehensible advances. Yet for all of our technological wizardry, it is more apparent every day that nothing dreamed up in a laboratory has more power to facilitate true healing than the essence of Nature itself. When we refine our ability to channel that power through our bodies and minds, then we become the living medical instruments we were meant to be.

Join Drs. John and Lisa Upledger to learn how you can strengthen your ability to work in concert with Nature to tap those natural forces. By learning more about the miraculous capabilities of the energy flowing through you every moment, you can perfect your own ability to direct your intention for the greatest good of all concerned.

Dr John E. Upledger, is president and founder of The Upledger Institute. Throughout his career as an osteopathic physician, he has been recognized as a leading proponent in the investigation of new therapies. Bruno Chickly, MD, DO (hon.) - Lymphatic Drainage

In this session Dr. Chikly will share some of the concepts behind what makes his signature modality, Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT), so effective. LDT is the first modality in the world to work with the specific rhythm of lymph (as described by scientific research) and the specific depth and direction of the lymph flow in the skin, mucosa, muscles, viscera and bones. As the developer of LDT, Dr. Chikly will explain why his work takes lymphatic drainage beyond traditional applications with the unique application of lymphatic mapping and other key techniques such as lympho-fascia release (LFR), which allows the simultaneous release in restrictions of the fascia and fluid body.

He'll also introduce some of the cutting-edge concepts featured in his newly developed Brain curriculum, which focus on advanced techniques to address very specific structures inside the brain and spinal cord. This approach encompasses such areas as: releasing tissue trauma before touching the central nervous system, face or crane and working on the brain fluid and nuclei as well as the thalamus, hypothalamus, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, amygdala, etc… Learn how these techniques can be applied to pathologies related to the central nervous system such as closed-head injuries, concussions, whiplash, headaches, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, cognitive behavioral dysfunctions, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, post-meningitis syndrome, birth difficulties or trauma.

Bruno Chickly is the developer of Lymph Drainage Therapy, a light-touch approach to navigating the lymphatic system, the first modality to teach students how to work directly with the specific lymphatic rhythm and the use of manual lymphatic mapping. He also recently developed the Brain Curriculum, which has gained worldwide popularity. Both curriculums are taught internationally through The Upledger Institute. Dr. Chikly’s exhaustive research on the lymphatic system earned him the 1994 Medal of the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris in his native France. He is a member of the International Society of Lymphology and the author of “Silent Waves: Theory and Practice of Lymph Drainage Therapy,” the first comprehensive book dealing with the lymphatic system.

Lone Sorensen - Facial Reflexology

Face Reflexology is a unique combination that unites traditional healing methods from the Orient and South America with the modern science of neurology. Your face is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels. Its close proximity to the brain - the control centre of the body - ensures that stimulus to your face has the shortest route to this important organ of your body, in order to effect a re-balancing of your health issues. As a complementary therapy, Face Reflexology is addressing all aspects of an individual: emotional, physical and mental. Conditions that can benefit are as diverse as menopausal and hormonal issues, digestive problems Migraines, muscle tension, the general affects of a stressful lifestyle, as well as learning and behavioural issues for children.

Lone Sorensen Lopez developed Face Reflexology over the course of her 28-year career during which she researched traditional healing therapies from around the world and combined her findings with medical knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology. Her work has been published in Spanish and Danish and more recently in English after she presented her first UK workshop in 2003. In 1985 Lone moved to Argentina where she established the first three reflexology schools and trained almost 2,000 Foot and Face reflexologists over a 12-year period. Headquartered in Spain, Lone Sorensen Lopez teaches Reflexology in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Holland, England, Japan, Mexico, Argentina and Spain.

Bonnie Prudden - Treatment of Trigger Points with Myotherapy

Bonnie Prudden, a true icon in the massage industry, discusses the discovery, indications and benefits of Myotherapy in the treatment of myofascial trigger points. In a Myotherapy session, the patient's body is checked for areas of potentially active trigger points, highly irritable spots that remain in the muscle after it has been damaged. Although Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy has its origins in the medical discipline of trigger point injection therapy pioneered by Janet Travell, M.D., and therapeutic exercise and immediate mobilization developed by Dr. Hans Kraus, it is non-invasive and very teachable which has encouraged wide spread use of Myotherapy by the ordinary person via Bonnie Prudden’s books, videos, self-help tools, TV and radio appearances.

Bonnie Prudden came to the attention of the American public in 1955 and ultimately inspired what has come to be the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport. During the era before videotape, Prudden released six exercise recordings and authored 19 books on fitness. She hosted the first nationally televised exercise show and established physical fitness programs at schools, hospitals, and other institutions. Prudden was credited with inventing the first pre- and post-natal exercise programs for women. Additionally, over 500,000 babies learned rudimentary water skills as a result of her mother and baby, swim and gym classes.

Prudden altered her focus in 1976 when she discovered the theory of myotherapy, the use of applying pressure to trigger points in the body to lessen muscle spasms and pain and to improve circulation. In 1979, after some investigation, she established the Bonnie Prudden Two-year School of Physical Fitness and Myotherapy. She explained the basics of myotherapy in her 1980 book, Pain Erasure, and later published Bonnie Prudden's Complete Guide to Pain-Free Living, followed by Fitness Guide for the After 50 Crowd. Bonnie Prudden has received many honors, most recently the The President’s Council Lifetime Achievement Award.

Steve Capellini - Adding World-Fusion Signature Services to Your Massage Practice

Massage therapists love offering their clients the benefits of highly therapeutic and pleasurable products during their treatments. Yet, therapists often miss golden opportunities to expand their businesses because they do not structure or market these treatments optimally. The secret, known by the spa world for several years now, is Signature Services. Signature Services are special, usually longer, treatments that incorporate products and techniques that make them just a little different from the norm. This class will show therapists how to create three distinct WORLD-FUSION SIGNATURE MASSAGE SERVICES: One service blends Swedish massage techniques with an exfoliation from Bali, a heated herbal compress from Thailand, and transitional movements inspired by Hawaiian Lomi Lomi. Another recreates Spring in Tuscany with warmed herbal-infused oils of rosemary and Neroli. The last service features clays and pine extracts from the deserts of the American Southwest, warmed basalt stones and pure sage for purification. You can offer your own clients an international therapeutic tour right in your own massage room. Fusion is the buzz word. Make it a part of your practice and watch what happens.

Steve Capellini has been working in the spa industry since 1983, first as a massage therapist, then as a trainer, supervisor, consultant and writer. He has trained the staffs at several top properties and currently teaches spa workshops to massage therapists, estheticians, and entrepreneurs across the U.S. and Canada. He wrote the monthly Spa Letters column for Massage Today, and has published 4 books: The Royal Treatment, Massage Therapy Career Guide, Massage for Dummies and Making the Switch to Being Rich.  As a spa spokesperson, he’s given keynote speeches and appeared on dozens of TV shows and in many magazine articles. He was in charge of developing the spa program for the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, FL. and the spa training curriculum for East-West College in Portland, OR. In 2007 Steve traveled to Thailand to learn Thai massage and Thai Herbal Ball techniques to incorporate into massage and spa treatments.

Hugette Long - Thermal Palms

There’s nothing new when it comes to the benefits and the effects of heat therapy. It’s been time-tested and true. What is new however is an innovative heat modality developed by a Canadian Massage Therapist. Thermal Palms are similar to ‘stones’ in that they are hand-held heat modalities, but the similarity ends there. Unlike stones, Thermal Palms are soft, mould to the contours of the body and provide a cushion of protection for massaging directly over bone. They are portable and can be used over the clothing.

Huguette Long graduated from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 1987. Long has practiced massage therapy in world renowned resorts and local spas, taught massage workshops at Algonquin College and managed a practice in an Ottawa-based fitness club. Long’s passion for research and development led to her design and patent of the Hydrothermic Spa Table in 1999. Her quest for a more convenient alternative to using hot stones for treatment led to the development of Thermal Palms.

Don McFarland is the founder of Body Harmony, a procedural pathway that evolved over six decades of synergistic integration, spanning the full spectrum of the transformational arts. He was certified by Dr. Ida Rolf in Structural Integration, by Judith Aston as an Aston Patterning Teacher, and by the State of California as a Licensed Doctor of Chiropractic.
